Matthew E. Schaefer, DO, is board-certified in general nephrology, diagnostic and interventional nephrology, and internal medicine, and is a vascular interpreter of diagnostic medical sonography. He practices internal medicine, nephrology, and vascular access out of our North Central Clinic and in the Vascular Access Center. He has medical privileges at several San Antonio hospitals, including Baptist Health System, Nix Health Care System, Methodist Healthcare System, and Christus Santa Rosa Health System.
A native of Columbia, Missouri, Dr. Schaefer remained in his home state throughout his extensive medical education. His education includes a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, as well as a doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine at A.T. Still University. He then went to the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in nephrology. Following this he did training in interventional nephrology through RMS Lifeline in Houston, TX. Dr. Schaefer started medical practice with San Antonio Kidney in 2007.
Dr. Schaefer is a member of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, the Renal Physicians Association, the American Society of Nephrology, and the Texas Medical Association. He is also a member of the executive board of the San Antonio Kidney Disease Center. He resides with his wife in San Antonio.
