Tahira Alves, MD, MPH was dedicated to helping people live healthier lives even before she became a physician. As a board-certified nephrologist and internal medicine physician, she joined the expert team at San Antonio Kidney Disease Center Physicians Group in 2012 and proudly serves at their Westover Hills clinic.
With a passion for public health and unshakable commitment to excellence, Dr. Alves began achieving honors and receiving research grants prior to college. Her medical training and research experience have taken her all over the United States, and across the world.
Dr. Alves graduated with honors from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts with a double major in molecular biology and women’s studies. Then, she went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine before moving back to Massachusetts to finish a Master of Public Health from Harvard University.
After completing her internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Alves pursued a nephrology fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Alves’ outstanding research in HIV and kidney disease among African Americans has been published internationally in esteemed, peer-reviewed journals and news publications. She’s also presented at numerous professional conferences and previously served as assistant professor of nephrology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
In addition to working with patients at three of San Antonio Kidney Disease Center’s clinics, Dr. Alves serves as medical director at DaVita Westover Dialysis.
